The Institute is owned and operated by the University
of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. It was established
as a biomedical conference and post-graduate educational
center in 1972, has since evolved into a year-round conference
center for medical and non-medical groups looking for
that very special place to hold meeting and events.
Aspen’s history is embedded in the Given Institute.
The land on which the Given is located was donated by
Aspen’s beloved matriarch and benefactor Elizabeth
Paepcke whose memory lives on in the Memorial Gardens
throughout the property.
The Public Lecture Series was inaugurated in 1991 to
benefit the Roaring Fork Valley community. The following
year, an advisory board of local residents was appointed
to help determine the medical and health related topics
that would most interest the community. The hard work
of the advisory board let to the addition of projects
such as the Brown Bag Lunchtime Lectures, the annual
Dental Health fair and the Save Your Sight Vision Screening
Campaign.
